Over 900 moved from J&K border villages to safer areas

There has been firing and shelling going on during past two days along the LoC in Rajouri district.

Many families from border villages in Nowshera left their homes on Friday following indiscriminate shelling by Pakistani troops. Those killed were identified as Tufail Hussain alias Bashir and his daughter Asiya Bi while his wife Zatoon Begam referred to GMC Jammu.

"There is the heaviest shelling going on from the Pakistani side".

While some people have gone to live with relatives, the majority of the residents have taken shelter in government buildings (mainly schools) earmarked by authorities as temporary accommodation for affected residents. The Indian army too is retaliating with full force while trying to counter the offensive. Under the name of Jammu and Kashmir, India controls over 222,236 square kilometer, most of the territory; while Pakistan administers the other portion, more than 86,000 square kilometers, which are divided into two zones: Kashmir Azad and Gilgit-Baltistan.

Sources in the Indian High Commission confirmed the summoning of Deputy High Commissioner J P Singh and asserted that the Pakistan Army initiated the ceasefire violation using artillery, mortar and small arms.

After the Pakistani shelling, 270 people were evacuated from various areas along the LoC in Rajouri district to safer places. "While three camps have been made operational, 28 others have been notified", Choudhary said. "The firing is presently on", an Indian defence ministry spokesperson told the Press Trust of India news agency. Six ambulances have been pressed into action and one mobile medical unit is stationed at Nowshera, he added. It said three Pakistani civilians were wounded in the violence.

A control room has been established in the office of SDM Nowshera for coordination. As the security forces were conducting the search operation, terrorists fired upon them, an official said.

Clashes between their forces in Kashmir largely stopped after a 2003 ceasefire but exchanges of fire have been more common over the past couple of years.
