What would cities do without courageous law enforcement officers who are willing to risk their lives to protect the rest of us from violent criminals, theft and other injustices?
In 1962, President John F. Kennedy established May 15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the entire week National Police Week.
"Tonight is about remembrance and tonight is about family", said Metro Police Sheriff Joseph Lombardo as about 500 Southern Nevadans, uniformed officers and family members of those killed in the line of duty listened somberly.
Since the first death of an officer recorded in 1791, more than 20,000 law enforcement officers in the US have died in the line of duty.

Shelby looked stone-faced when the verdict was read, but her lawyer said she was "elated" with the jury's decision. Prosecutors argued that Shelby "reacted unreasonably by escalating the situation" when they filed arrest papers.
The ceremony is an annual event that brings together uniformed officers from law enforcement agencies across the county to pay tribute to those who have died while serving in the line of duty.
That's what law enforcement memorial day is all about.
Monday was Peace Officers Memorial Day and this week is National Police Week. Last year, we lost twelve officers in California, a number that always carries significant weight, no matter how high or low it may appear.
"We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to police officers and first responders across the country", Buchanan said in a statement.
But appreciation for police officers doesn't just come during National Police Week but occurred during Pct. "We are blessed in McLennan County to have the type of law enforcement with the county and all our cities and surrounding cities, we've got tremendous people working", he said.
He tossed a "45" hat midway through his remarks to a young boy he identified as Micah, whose father had died in the line of duty.
The Louisiana State Police will honor and remember the men and women of law enforcement who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. The ceremony, which serves as part of National Police Week and is sponsored by the Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge 70, will be held at the Manatee County Courthouse, 1115 Manatee Ave.
