Burnaby kids embrace NDP sweep in Student Vote

The NDP garnered 41 seats, and the Greens finished with three seats, leaving Weaver to determine whether to side with the Liberals or the New Democrats in a minority government situation.

Christy Clark, who has been asked by B.C.'s Lieutenant-Governor to continue as premier, hinted Wednesday that she would be willing to work more collaboratively with the other parties.

"I think, in general, the high-profile policies in the Green platform are closer to the NDP but it's not clear that the leaders are so close, nor necessarily that their voters are", she said, noting that the popular narrative that the greens split the vote isn't supported by the results.

The balance of power is likely held by the Green Party, headed by an academic and climate change specialist named Andrew Weaver, which took three seats on Vancouver Island.

Weaver said the Greens are open to talking to both the Liberals and New Democrats about governing, but until the votes are counted it's too early to discuss political deals.

There will be at least one recount after the NDP won in Courtenay-Comox but just nine votes.

Horgan says the final results are hanging in the balance and he can't wait until May 24 when we expect all absentee ballots to be in and reminded people that right now, the majority of MLAs are not Liberal.

Clark says she believes there was a very strong message sent by British Columbians: "they want us to work together collaboratively and across party lines". Clark asked Trudeau to ban thermal coal exports through her province in retaliation for United States duties on softwood lumber.

"We offered people a change that they could count on and British Columbians delivered that change tonight", said Weaver. Fursteneau has battled the Liberals over a contaminated waste dump in her riding; Olsen is an opponent of the Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion Clark is backing.

He is expected to return to the team late this season after having surgery last week for a blocked artery near his right armpit. The Blue Jays claimed Ramirez off waivers, but designated him for assignment before he pitched in a game.

"[Premier Christy Clark] may end up with a majority, depending on recounts, absentee ballots, etc.", he said. Premier Christy Clark now leads, with 43 seats as opposed to the NDP's 41 and the Green party's 3.

But while Clark's remarks had the tone of a victory speech, BC NDP Leader John Horgan told an equally boisterous crowd he had no plans to concede quite yet.

"Site C is being constructed for an industry that does not exist, the LNG industry, and so desperate are the BC Liberals to actually land LNG that they sign contracts to subsidize LNG ... to the tune of 6 cents a kilowatt hour", said Weaver.

The Liberals also won the popular vote by a narrow margin, with 734,018 votes (40.84%) compared to the NDP's 716,474 (39.86%) votes.

This election is being fought on a new electoral map and 87 seats in the legislature are up for grabs, with 371 candidates vying for them.

The campaign began four weeks ago with Clark and the Horgan locked in a tight race to be premier, and Weaver hoping to build upon his one seat in the legislature.

"I let them go with it", said teacher-librarian Kae Solomon, who organized the mock election at Lyndhurst.

The Green party needed four seats to get official party status in the legislature, which would mean more resources for the party and a greater role in the house.
