Terry mulls retirement after Sunderland match

John Terry was on target in one of his last games for Chelsea as they recorded an entertaining 4-3 win over Watford thanks to a late victor from Cesc Fabregas.

Terry, handed his first league start since September as Antonio Conte rested nine of the players who sealed the title at West Brom on Friday, opened the scoring for the Blues but two minutes later gifted Etienne Capoue an equaliser.

But Watford levelled through goals to Daryl Janmaat and Stefano Okaka, before Fabregas scored the victor.

Asked if Terry should retire, Conte said: "No".

But the man Chelsea fans hail as "captain, leader, legend" in banners draped around the stadium was able to compensate for years through his astute reading of the game, accurate passing, natural strength and sheer commitment.

Conte told Chelsea TV: "We could become the first team to reach this target".

Despite off-field controversies, including a charge of racist abuse for which he was cleared in court and an alleged affair with a former team mate's ex-girlfriend, Terry hardly ever let Chelsea down on the pitch.

The line-up included Michy Batshuayi, who scored the title-winning goal against the Baggies and veteran Chelsea captain John Kerry, playing his final season at Stamford Bridge.

Terry's final Premier League game for the Blues is set to be against Sunderland this Sunday.

This was Terry's 41st Premier League goal - already more than any other defender.

"If I could have written my story as a 14-year-old, when I signed on the pitch, this would have been it", he wrote in Monday's match-day programme.

Azpilicueta said Chelsea had been prepared for a tough challenge from Watford. The manager has shown great confidence in me.

"When I say that to people, they don't really understand it".

Attention will then turn to the May 27 FA Cup final with Arsenal, when a Chelsea win would secure the double in Antonio Conte's first season as head coach.
