The Cleveland Indians managed to eke out a win Monday at Progressive Field on a rough night from the mound for two of the top staffs in the American League.
Both starters had a rough first inning, especially Chris Archer.
Despite the rough start on Monday, Carrasco owns a 2.60 ERA with a 0.88 WHIP and 52 strikeouts in 52 innings pitched this season.
"Really, I don't worry about that", he said.
"His stuff is so good", said manager Terry Francona after the game. But we're going to have to shut him down for a little bit. The righty wound up getting charged with five runs over 3 2/3 frames and his velocity was fading as the game went along. Then Evan Longoria hit a grounder right at Jose Ramirez, but instead of running to third base and throwing to first, Ramirez tried to start a 6-4-3 double play, but threw to second wildly because of the runner going to third.
"We know we're capable of playing better than we have so far", left-handed reliever Andrew Miller said. Cody Allen worked the ninth to pick up his 10th save despite giving up a solo home run to Peter Bourjos.
Tunnel Collapses at Hanford Nuclear Facility in Washington State
A representative at the Hanford Emergency Operations Center who would not give her name said there were no injuries reported. A massive cleanup that started in the 1980s is still ongoing at Hanford, with the project expected to be completed by 2060.
"When Lonnie gets a big hit, it ends up being a crooked number which ends up probably winning the game for us", Francona said.
Five walks and a wild pitch put Cleveland in a prime position to knock Archer out of the game after just five innings of work - 5 IP, 5 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 6 BB, 6 K (101 pitches, 57 strikes, 56.4%, eight groundouts, zero flyouts). The Gainesville, Florida native threw 70.2 percent of his pitches for strikes in 2016 and has improved that to 71.1 this year.
Edwin Encarnacion, hitting fifth in the lineup for the first time this season, then grounded into what was almost an inning-ending double play. He hit 42 homers and drove in 127 runs for Toronto last season before signing a $60 million, three-year contract with Cleveland.
Abraham Almonte also left the game early. Encarnacion, who is hitting.198, was moved down to the No. 5 spot, and he went 0-for-5. In the third, Yan Gomes continued his torrid May by doubling off the left-field wall, which scored Ramirez from first.
Almonte was removed in the fifth with a sore right shoulder, an injury that occurred during an at-bat last week, and will be placed on the disabled list. "How bad is Kevin Cash at the plate", the scoreboard said. Corey Dickerson has a.340 average, 12 doubles, six home runs and 13 RBI to lead the team right now while Logan Morrison has 10 homers with 24 RBI. The Nationals blew another one later Sunday when Freddy Galvis' two-run triple off Jacob Turner (2-1) put the Phillies ahead 5-4 in the eighth.
RHP Danny Salazar (2-3, 5.20) will make his third career start against Tampa Bay as he comes in with 13.2 innings of one-run ball already under his belt.
