He cast uncertainty over years of worldwide efforts to foster a two-state solution when he met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House in February. "These comments, if true, were not authorized by the White House".

"For American diplomats to say that the Western Wall is part of the West Bank astonished us", a senior official in the Prime Minister's Bureau said.

Palestine is against any kind of military intervention to resolve the dispute, said President Abbas who will also be meeting his Indian counterpart President Pranab Mukherjee today. "Now that the administration is expressing strong determination to reach a final status deal, naturally Israelis are concerned about what happens to Jerusalem", Gold said in an email.

Israel annexed east Jerusalem in 1967 and claims the entire city as its undivided capital.

Rivlin called on the "whole world to recognise Jerusalem as the official capital of the state of Israel". It later annexed east Jerusalem in a move never recognized by the global community.

It is highly unusual for a new envoy to visit the holy site just hours after arriving in Israel. "On the contrary, it would advance it by correcting an historical injustice and by shattering the Palestinian fantasy that Jerusalem is not the capital of Israel".

"The comment that the Western Wall is part of the West Bank was received with astonishment", a statement to from the Israeli official said. "Israel has made contact with the USA on this matter", the official said.

"What are you talking about?" the official reportedly told the Israeli team helping the USA prepare for the trip, according to the Times of Israel.

Speaking of Trump, he said: "His love for and commitment to the state of Israel is rock solid and it enjoys his highest priority".

Netanyahu's office sent reporters a fact sheet of quotes on the prime minister's hope for a US embassy in Jerusalem and had this to say about Powell: "The claims posted by a Fox News correspondent are false". Friedman is an orthodox Jew who has raised funds for a Jewish settlement in the occupied West Bank that Israel captured together with East Jerusalem 50 years ago.

Friedman, a fundraiser for settlement causes and vocal critic of liberal Jewish groups, has backtracked from some of his controversial positions. (New US ambassador Daniel Friedman, however, made it his first stop on arrival in Israel.) Having Trump there at all is a coup of sorts for Netanyahu, even as a private stop without live press coverage.

However, Coalition chairman David Bitan said Monday that Netanyahu was not prepared to pay the political price the Trump Administration would demand in exchange for moving the embassy to Jerusalem. "I wished him success, especially on his upcoming trip".

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Sunday that Trump was still assessing whether relocating the embassy would help or harm chances for peace. Later that day, he will travel to Bethlehem and meet with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.
