White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer played a low-key role in one of the biggest moments of Donald Trump's presidency: his firing of FBI Director James Comey.

Since tweeting out his statement on Comey's firing Tuesday night, he has only tweeted twice - once announcing that Turkey's president Recep Tayyip Erdogan will visit the White House, and once linking to an op-ed on the benefits of trade for America's farmers.

EDITOR'S NOTE: This story has been updated to more precisely describe White House press secretary Sean Spicer's location late Tuesday night in the minutes before he briefed reporters.

"As a very active President with lots of things happening, it is not possible for my surrogates to stand at podium with ideal accuracy!"

But at the same time Stone says he wants to testify, since members of Congress' panels involved in the Russian Federation probe "have disparaged me publicly".

Multiple outlets are now reporting that Trump is looking to send Spicer packing.

Spicer got his wish and was soon standing in near darkness between two tall scrubs, with more than a dozen reporters closely gathered around him. But Spicer and his team have kept up regular briefings.

Trump's suggestion to cancel press briefings was met with criticism from members of the media who regularly attend the briefings. USA press was not allowed into either meeting nor has the White House released any photos.

"The more we inform our people about the Russians....the better", said Coats.

"That exercise, conducted in full view of our republic's citizens, is clearly in line with the spirit of the First Amendment", Mason said.

"We see time and time again an attempt to parse every little word and make it a game of gotcha as opposed to trying to figure out what the policies are", Spicer said.

In the Fox interview, Trump seemed to herald his own work ethic.

Thursday: "Oh, I was going fire regardless of recommendation. he made a recommendation, he's highly respected, very good guy, very smart guy, the Democrats like him, the Republicans like him, he made a recommendation but regardless of recommendation I was going to fire Comey", Trump said in an interview with NBC's Lester Holt. "Another president, I won't use names, but another president doesn't doing what I'm doing".

He says Comey was scheduled to appear at Thursday's hearing and that his absence cost the committee an opportunity to get at the truth, at least for a day.
