UKIP leader Paul Nuttall said it had been "a victim of its own success" over Brexit and that the party was prepared to pay the price of losing seats to the Tories because it had won the crucial European Union referendum.

Labour faces a challenge on a "historic scale" if it is to win the General Election on June 8, Jeremy Corbyn has said, after the party suffered heavy losses in the local council polls. That figure this time appears to be down to barely 3 per cent.

All the votes have been counted giving a clear win for the Tories.

"It seems that the Theresa May and the Conservative Party have consolidated their grip on the right-wing of the British electorate, and they are very much the party that is trusted to deliver Brexit", said Phillips.

"There are four and a half weeks of campaigning still to go before the June 8 general election". Currently, she enjoys a working majority of just 17.

The early results suggested that the Conservatives had grabbed votes from both Labour and UKIP, signalling that May's bid to position her party in the political centre ground and take a strong stance on Brexit may be paying dividends.

The Tories have 464 councillors, a net gain of 125, while Labour has 322, a net loss of 65.

But Mr Corbyn's allies blame a collapse in the UKIP vote, as well as previous attempts by some of his own MPs to undermine him, for the poor results.

The Conservatives made sweeping advances across the United Kingdom, gaining more than 500 councillors.

According to ICRC, on its Twitter page it stated that it acted as an intermediary between Boko Haram and the Nigerian government. It is feared that other girls were strapped with explosives and sent on missions as suicide bombers.

The party's performance in the last county council elections in 2013, when it had a 29% share of the vote, was even worse than the 31% it took in the 2015 general election.

Party leader Nicola Sturgeon said wresting control from Labour and becoming the biggest party on Glasgow City Council was a "fantastic, historic result".

The Liberal Democrats also lost two seats whilst UKIP, who fielded 12 candidates, won no seats.

"(They are) encouraging results but I am cautious about predicating the general election on them", Defence Minister Michael Fallon told BBC radio.

The Tories were up on 276 seats, up 164. Nuttall put the poor results down to May talking tough on Brexit.

Indeed, party leader Paul Nuttall told members on a visit to Margate last month the area was "the heart of Ukip". "Our electoral success over recent years was a key driver in forcing the Conservatives to embrace our cause under a new Prime Minister who was campaigning for a Remain vote in the referendum a year ago".

So far it's UKIP's only seat in the country. "The eleven point Tory lead in the 1987 general election was nearly double the six point lead they got in the locals just a month before".

The online poll of 1,552 people was conducted on May 3 and 4.

Writer Caitlin Moran has said she regrets Jeremy Corbyn being voted as Labour leader and quipped that she did more research into a sports bra than she did the politician.
