BC Liberals win minority government

The Greens haven't said anything about who they would support in the new government.

Weaver had requests to speak with B.C. Liberal leader Christy Clark and NDP leader John Horgan Wednesday after a preliminary vote count Tuesday night left Clark one seat short of a majority. "We both agreed on a number of issues, yes", he said.

The NDP did better than expected in greater Vancouver, which has historically been the linchpin for the Liberals, but it has also given away some of its own seats to Christy Clark's party, jeopardizing its chances of securing a majority.

The Liberals lost seats in Metro Vancouver and several cabinet ministers were defeated.

"I'm really proud of the work that we did, 6,500 houses, 8,000 people, changed some minds, not enough, proud of the effort and enjoying this night with my team", Dutton said.

During the press conference, Weaver also denied taking away exclusively NDP votes during the election. In Maple Ridge-Mission, the NDP lead over the Liberals is just 120 votes. Had the Green voters (7.45 per cent) voted for the Liberals instead, Anton would have beat Chow and held onto her riding.

He said however the government ends up looking, the NDP's increased seat count in the legislature strengthens the party.

But Harrison's colleague suspects voters gave the Greens the benefit of the doubt this time around and warned that wouldn't be the case next time. Whichever party they choose to work with would get to form the government, while the other party would become the official opposition.

It's an exciting time for Green Party members, a party that has struggled to make political headway in the province.

But he said the Greens, who do not accept political donations from corporations or unions, are committed to removing them entirely from B.C. politics.

Modi said he firmly believed that Buddhism's message of peace was the answer to growing violence all over the world. The 150-bed hospital was constructed with Indian aid of Rs.50 crore under India's developmental aid to Sri Lanka.

Weaver said the Greens are open to talking to both the Liberals and New Democrats about governing, but until the votes are counted it's too early to discuss political deals.

"In the days ahead there will be plenty of discussions taking place between all parties".

But it's likely British Columbia is heading into unfamiliar territory, with a high probability of the first minority government since 1952 when W.A.C. Bennett enlisted the support of the lone Labour MLA to take charge.

But Weaver has promised Green MLAs won't be forced to toe the party line.

"The NDP would have done worse in this election if it were not for the Green vote", said Harrison.

This election is being fought on a new electoral map and 87 seats in the legislature are up for grabs, with 371 candidates vying for them.

The leaders spent election day on a final push to get out votes after a sometimes bruising 28-day campaign fought on jobs, the economy and the influence of big donors in provincial politics.

But Clark's single most important priority - developing a liquefied natural gas industry - is a non-starter for Weaver, a former climate change scientist who has fought against LNG.

"There were three cases where the Greens seems to have directly or indirectly hurt the NDP", said Harrison. In a minority government, Trans Mountain could be doomed, with the Greens and NDP opposed.

Clark called for a retaliatory ban or tax on USA thermal coal exports moving through B.C. ports.
