Earlier in the day, Lavrov was asked the same question by journalists ahead of his talks with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.
Tensions surrounding Russia's involvement in the US election remain high.
Lavrov's trip was preceded by Trump's surprise dismissal of Comey, who was overseeing two important investigations that shaped Trump's a year ago victory against Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.
As the President delivered his withering assessment of Mr Comey's work, reports emerged that America's top law enforcement official had asked for more money and manpower for his Russian Federation investigation in the days before he was sacked.
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson stood next to Lavrov, smiling as his counterpart batted down the question before leading him away from reporters.
"Does the Comey firing cast a shadow of your talks, gentlemen?" a reported asked. Lavrov continued: "You are kidding".
Mr Trump said last month that relations with Russian Federation were at an "all-time low" but speaking after the meeting in the Oval Office, Mr Lavrov sought to blame the previous administration for that, describing the discussion with Mr Trump as "free of ideology, which hampered ties with the Obama White House".
Still, the overlap between the investigation and Trump's diplomatic efforts made for uncomfortable optics.
The closed door meeting will take place at 10:30am in the Oval Office, according to the White House.
Tillerson arrives in Alaska for Arctic meeting
However, Lavrov lamented the suspension of high-level military talks between defence officials of the Arctic states. Scientists reported this week that it is warming so rapidly that it now is emitting more carbon than it captures.
The US missile strike angered Moscow and led Lavrov to declare that "it's sad how damaging this is to the already bad relations between US and Russian Federation".
To a question about Comey, Trump reportedly replied, "He wasn't doing a good job".
Trump fired now-former FBI Director James Comey, who told Congress earlier this year that his agency has been investigating Russia's actions - and possible ties to anyone associated with the Trump campaign - since July.
Wednesday's meetings followed talks Tillerson held with Putin last month in Moscow. Rosenstein then wrote a memo for Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who then recommended to Trump that Comey be fired.
The Russian foreign minister also rejected claims that Moscow interfered in the election that sent Trump to the White House as "fabrications". During that trip, Tillerson said relations with Russian Federation were at a low and needed to be rebuilt.
Relations between the two former Cold War foes soured under former president Barack Obama over Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014 and its unyielding support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
"You're talking about President Trump on the campaign with respect to Jim Comey".
The diplomat says it's in Russia's interests for the United States to contribute, and that he believes the U.S.is genuinely interested. The zones would not cover areas where the USA -led coalition is fighting the Islamic State group, but enforcement and other questions remain unanswered.
