Kushner Cos says to skip China marketing push this weekend

Kushner Companies earlier this week apologized for Meyer having mentioned Jared Kushner, U.S. President Donald Trump's son-in-law, in discussing the project.

Ms Meyer had mentioned her brother while urging investors to put $500,000 (£386,500) into a New Jersey property project through the so-called EB-5 programme. Kushner, who is married to Trump's daughter Ivanka, ran his family's real estate company before joining the administration and was instrumental in planning the Jersey City project.

In addition to Meyer, Laurent Morali, president of Kushner Companies, was included in marketing materials online for the China road show.

A promotional Chinese website had previously advertised Meyer's appearance at an event in Shenzhen on Saturday. It said Meyer had not meant to attract investors by using her brother's name.

"No one from Kushner Companies will be in China this weekend", company spokeswoman Risa Heller told the Washington Post on Thursday.

The Kushner Companies are a diversified real estate organization headquartered in New York City with 20,000 multifamily apartments and 13 million square feet of office, industrial and retail space in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Ohio and IL, according to the company website.

Outcry over Netflix films prompts Cannes to change rules
The film reportedly bombed, with Netflix taking the highly unusual step of not releasing its box office figures. The Cannes Film Festival has taken a stand against festival eligible movies not being shown in movie theaters.

Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, a longtime critic of the EB-5 program, said Thursday that Kushner's sister may have left investors with the false impression that they would get special treatment because of her brother's position in the White House.

The EB-5 program allows foreigners to get a fast-track US visa in exchange for investing at least $500,000 in an eligible project in economically distressed or rural areas.

Grassley, who says the visa program should be used to help create jobs in rural and economically depressed areas, sent a letter to Kelly demanding that he quickly implement the proposed program changes.

The Kushner project, known as One Journal Square, is the latest example of the potential conflicts of interest that Jared Kushner faces in his prominent administration role. Kushner's lawyer Blake Roberts said last weekend that Kushner is not involved with his family's company.

"As you know, EB-5 applicants ordinarily wait at least two years for a petition to be processed and for visas to become available", he wrote. Kelly, the homeland security secretary, is weighing whether to adopt the changes and is expected to make a decision in the coming months. Office-sharing company WeWork confirmed this week that it is canceling plans to lease space as an anchor tenant. The proposed changes would address long-standing criticism of the program and potentially hamper the Kushner family's fundraising efforts for their New Jersey project. And the Jersey City mayor recently came out against awarding a valuable tax break for the building.
