The $206.5 million man for Arizona entered the seventh inning with 11 strikeouts and one walk on 90 pitches but allowed a solo homer to Gregory Polanco, who almost went deep on the second pitch of the at-bat before crushing an 85 miles per hour slider an estimated 382 feet to right field on Greinke's 95th pitch of the night. Greinke struck out nine with a walk in the first five innings.
Gerrit Cole (1-4) allowed two runs and seven hits in seven innings.
Fernando Rodney pitched the ninth for his ninth save. Andrew McCutcheon hit a sharp line drive to right in the first inning, where David Peralta made a diving grab, catching the ball just before it would have hit the ground.
Greinke faced the minimum through seven innings - he issued a walk earlier in the game, and the runner was erased on a caught stealing - and had only thrown 90 pitches, meaning the no-hitter was within each.
DIAMONDBACKS KEY TRENDS: The Diamondbacks have been profitable at home, going 21-8 in their last 29 home games and are 11-4 in their last 15 home games versus a right-handed starter. The home run turned the game from a no-hitter to a one run game, and sent the Diamondbacks back to obscurity for the night. He singled up the middle to score Chris Owings, who was running on the pitch, from second base after a leadoff double for a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Drury has now reached base safely in 16 of 17 home games this season and 30 of his last 31 overall. The original safe call was overturned in a 39-second review. Jordy Mercer led off the third with a walk but was thrown out by Mathis trying to steal second.
So, Cole had allowed two earned runs or less in each of his last five starts. The D-backs tagged him for two runs just three innings into the game.
Players Championship 2017: Adam Scott had no business making birdie from here
He made his first eagle with a 55-foot putt at the par-five 11th before sinking a 10-footer at the par-five 16th. Day trailed by three shots after three bogeys in his final four holes, with Phil Mickelson also two-under.
Swinging through an 82-mph slider for out No. 2 in the sixth inning, Gift Ngoepe struck for the second time in as many at-bats.
Greinke's slider strayed just once, on Polanco's homer. It also marked Greinke's 26th career 10+ strikeout game and second this season.
Greinke retired the next three Pirates batters to finish his start at eight innings on 107 pitches as he lowered his ERA to 2.79.
Peralta received an ovation as he neared the dugout after that play, but it was nothing compared to the reception Greinke received when he walked off the mound after the eighth.
Facing a tough lineup in a hitters park, Cole went seven innings on 103 pitches. Harrison and McCutchen combined to go 0-for-6 on Thursday. Heck, even Jeff Mathis got on base. It was only his third hit in his last 44 plate appearances, a stretch of 14 games including 12 total starts.
