Exchange of fire on Afghanistan-Pakistan border kills civilians

The Pakistani Army on Sunday claimed that it has killed 50 Afghan security personnel and injured 100 others in retaliatory firing at the border between two countries in the Balochistan province.

Maj. Gen. Nadeem Ahmad told reporters Sunday at the Chaman border crossing that two of his soldiers were also killed and another nine were wounded.

Pakistan and Afghanistan have agreed to conduct a geological survey on Monday at Chaman border in order to determine the correct boundaries on both sides.

He said Pakistani forces had to destroy five Afghan posts as the Afghans had tried to "invade" Pakistani territory with "ulterior motives", adding that all those forces trying to make Pakistani territory a disputed region will face strong retaliation.

The authorities concerned asked the people living in the villages close to the border to shift to safe places.

In response to the attack, Pakistan had closed its borders with Afghanistan at Chaman and Torkham on February 18 after a series of terrorist attacks in the country killed over 100 people.

He said the clash erupted after the Afghan forces prevented the Pakistanis from entering Afghanistan.

Talking to a TV channel, Foreign Office spokesperson Nafees Zakaria said that the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan was internationally recognised border, and its management was vital to control terrorism.

Reiterating its charge that India and Afghanistan had formed a nexus against it, Pakistan has asked the U.S. to help break the alleged alliance "for the sake of regional peace", a media report here said on Monday. "We had informed them about our census activity", he said, adding that they carried out the census in the areas situated within the Pakistani border.

Islamabad accuses Afghan forces of cross-border firing during a Balochistan population census, killing at least nine. The 2,500 kilometer-long border between Afghanistan and Pakistan is largely unpoliced and passes through much mountainous terrain.

"We will use all possible ways to resolve the problems and if the borders are closed by Pakistan, we will take action in this regard", said Mohammad Qurban Haqjo, the acting deputy minister for commerce at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Gen. Asif Ghafoor said in a statement. Police said that four Frontier Corps (FC) personnel were among the injured.

He inspected the forward positions of the defence forces at the border where officers concerned briefed him on the situation in detail.
