In 2012, the BJP bagged almost 22 per cent of votes collectively in the three municipal corporations.

Even as fewer than expected people came out to exercise their franchise, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, who was among one of the early voters, questioned the State Election Commission over its preparedness for the polls.

The party citing an internal survey had claimed to win 218 wards, during campaigning for the MCD polls.

Over 1.1 lakh voters are eligible to exercise their franchise for the first time. Of them, 13 centres are in South Delhi where voting percentage was 50 percent, 16 centres have beens set up in North Delhi where voting percentage was 54 percent. "Wait for the counting of votes and actual results and you will witness a close fight between the Congress and the BJP while the AAP will be a distant third", a senior Delhi Congress leader, Chatar Singh said. "Reports from across Delhi of EVM malfunction; people with voter slips were not allowed to vote".

The AAP chief had complained about malfunctioning Electronic Voting Machines on the day of voting, as well.

Apart from this, at GTB ward, voters had to face problems as some EVMs were not functioning properly.

Over 2,500 candidates are in the fray for elections to North Delhi Municipal Corporation and South Delhi Municipal Corporation (104 seats each) and East Delhi Municipal Congress (64 seats). The BJP, the Congress and the AAP are locked in a triangular contest.

The opposition, particularly the BJP, which has been on a dogged pursuit for control of Delhi, had described the election as a referendum on two years of the Arvind Kerjriwal Government.

Former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit reminded voters about the developmental works done by the previous Congress governments and asserted her party was gaining ground.

The exit polls for the three Municipal Corporations of Delhi (MCD) have predicted the worst for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which came to power in the national capital in 2015 with a thumping majority. Axis-My India polls predicted similar results that the BJP will win between 202 and 220 seats, AAP 23-35 and Congress 19-31.

State election commissioner SK Srivastava told a press conference that North corporation's Bakhtawarpur ward recorded the highest turnout at over 68%, while south Delhi's Lado Sarai registered the least turnout at 39%.

This time, a new entrant, the Swaraj India Party, led by Yogendra Yadav, a factional rebel group of AAP, is proclaiming that it is also in the race. The two smaller civic bodies are the Delhi Cantonment Board as well as the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC).
