Vinod Khanna's last rites carried out in Mumbai; Bollywood bids final adieu

He featured in some of the biggest Bollywood hits like "Mere Apne", "Insaaf", "Parvarish", "Muqaddar Ka Sikandar", "Qurbani", "Dayavaan", "Mera Gaon Mera Desh", "The Burning Train" and "Amar Akbar Anthony". He passed away at 11.20 AM. In his last film Dilwale, he played the father of Shah Rukh Khan and Varun Dhawan's characters.

Rishi wrote, "Shameful. Not ONE actor of this generation attended Vinod Khanna's funeral".

Khanna is survived by his wife, Kavita; acting sons Rahul and Akshaye, as well as another son and daughter.

Khanna acted in more than 146 films including Imtihan (1974) opposite Tanuja, a movie remembered for its hit songs.

Vinod Khanna was admitted to Sir H.N. Reliance Foundation Hospital and Research Center in Girgaon for a few weeks before succumbing to cancer, reportedly. He was last seen on-screen in Hema Malini-starrer Ek Thi Rani Aisi Bhi, which released on April 21.

Vinod Khanna died at the age of 70 early on Thursday morning in Mumbai, after battling cancer.

The actor, who was born in a Punjabi family of textile merchants in Peshawar in 1946, chose Punjab to make his political debut in 1997 when he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Vinod Khanna was respected and admired for his work in films like Achanak, Hera Pheri, Haath Ki Safai and Muqqadar Ka Sikander.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Finance minister Arun Jaitley, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, cultural minister Vinod Tawde, former Congress MP from Mumbai Milind Deora, MPCC chief Ashok Chavan were amongst the politicians who paid respects to the actor over twitter.

Celebrities, young and old, remembered Khanna as one of the most charismatic personalities of the Hindi film world. "May his soul rest in peace", melody queen Lata Mangeshkar tweeted.

Veteran singer Asha Bhosle added: "A decent man and a star till the very end". "My heartfelt condolences to the family".

Condoling the demise of film star-cum-politician Vinod Khanna, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan on Thursday said he would be remembered as a flawless gentleman with a perennial smile on his face. "Thank you for being my friend".

"His screen presence is unparalleled even today.his super star swag is what we grew up on.RIP #VinodKhanna.thoughts and prayers.", tweeted Karan Johar. "Truly end of an era".
