The Stories feature in the Facebook app was just the first step, Zuck said, adding that Facebook has some big plans for the AR functionality. But it also went far beyond that, leveraging two of its strengths - the company's large developer ecosystem and its engineering prowess - to back up Zuckerberg's claim that Facebook is on its way toward building "the first mainstream augmented-reality platform".

But his attentions were primarily focused on the unveiling of Spaces, a new Beta app that has been developed for the Oculus Rift.

Apart from Camera Effects platform, new Facebook Spaces VR app was also announced alongside Developer Circles, a community-driven program that's free to join and open to any developer.

Facebook, Inc. (NASDAQ: FB) chief executive Mark Zuckerberg has unveiled his strategy in virtual reality and augmented reality on Tuesday at the annual Facebook Developer Conference, or F8.

Facebook also announced a full-fledged VR app dubbed Facebook Spaces where users on social media can connect in virtual reality space.

The other camera effect is the Frame studio. AR Studio, now open for beta applications, can be used to create masks, scripted effects, animated frames and other AR technologies that react to movement, the environment or interactions during Live videos. Facebook isn't stopping at virtual worlds.

Facebook will depend on an inventory of external developers to contribute towards this new platform.

Messenger also gets some new chat functions including an extension that allows more than one person to interact with popular apps like Spotify, for group interactions with playlists. The latest extension will allow multiple people to chat with the same business at the same time.
