Lake Havasu City earns 2nd place in America's Best Communities competition

The city made it all the way to the finals where they were selected as one of eight remaining communities. Williams and other city officials were in Denver, Colorado to present the city's revitalization plans to a panel of judges. The ceremony will be live streamed on the America's Best Communities Facebook Page.

While the city was a finalist, it was not named in the top three.

Transforming abandoned factories in a modern technical center along the city's riverfront, adjacent to the Marshall University campus. The city's revitalization plan focuses on the Madison Connector, a multipurpose trail created to connect its historic downtown and hilltop area.

During Williams' presentation Wednesday, he said each project will need to benefit all of Huntington, not just one area. Lake Havasu City's revitalization plan can be seen at the "America's Best Communities" website.

From the original pool of about 350 communities, the field was narrowed to 50 in the quarterfinals, 15 in the semifinals and down eight finalists.

The finalists, which rose to the top eight out of a field of 350 communities across the USA, competed for first-, second- and third-place prizes worth $3 million, $2 million and $1 million, respectively. The $2 million second place prize and $1 million third place prize were awarded to Lake Havasu City, Arizona and Statesboro, Georgia, respectively. Communities advanced in the competition based on the effectiveness of the revitalization plans developed, fine-tuned and implemented over the course of the three-year competition.

The plan also called for the creation of the West Central Mountains Community Foundation to provide the long-term framework for making the improvements.
