He previously served positions in Iran's Judiciary, as the Attorney General from 2014 to 2016, and Deputy Chief Justice from 2004 to 2014 for ten years. Pursuant to the Iranian law, that process can be extended for 4 days.

The death of Ayatollah Rafsanjani left a political gap which would be compounded if Aytaollah Khamenei was to leave office before, during, or just after the Presidential elections. Iran's economy also suffered under heavy global sanctions during his administration because of Western suspicions that Tehran was secretly pursuing nuclear weapons.

He added that Iran never had "aggressive aims, but peace is not a one-way road and if we decide to be peaceful the other party. may not".

Millions of people demanded a re-run, but the supreme leader insisted the result was valid and ordered a major crackdown on dissent that saw dozens of opposition supporters killed and thousands detained. When he was head of government from 2005 to 2013, Ahmadinejad repeatedly questioned the Holocaust, called for Israel's destruction and expanded Iran's nuclear program.

The memory of the 2009 unrest likely sparked Khamenei's comments in September.

"The production capacity of industrial and defense organizations has increased by 148% and the exports of defense sector by 227 percent...", the president said, comparing the figures to those in 2013 when he took office. Ahmadinejad registered for presidential election along with his close aide, former vice-president Hamid Baqayee. He suggested the USA presidency is decided behind closed doors.

Electoral campaigns will officially begin on April 28 and will continue until May 17.

The registration for presidential elections officially started on April 11 and will end on April 15.

Like all candidates, the 60-year-old must be vetted and approved by a powerful constitutional watchdog known as the Guardian Council before he can ultimately run. The council normally does not approve dissidents or women.

Running on the platform "More freedom and peace" Rouhani said, "Freedom should be expanded in both scope and strength in this country". Key among them was the nuclear deal between Tehran and six leading world powers in 2015, which paved the way for a relaxation of sanctions in return for curbs on Iran's nuclear programme.
