Amid the company's struggle with the Note 7, Samsung's vice chairman was embroiled in a political scandal facing charges, including bribing ousted South Korean President Park Geun-hye.

Lee, who was arrested in February, has been charged with paying almost US$40 million to the now-impeached president's close friend Choi Soon-Sil, allegedly as bribes to secure policy favours.

Lee's lawyers have previously denied all charges brought against Lee. They argued that the huge sum of corporate money was used for Lee's personal benefit - to secure a business merger and lobby regulators to help strengthen his control over Samsung.

The court is expected to deliver a verdict by the end of May.
