"While most Hollywood films tend to perform well primarily on the Saturday and Sunday of the opening weekend, Fast and Furious 8, has had one of the biggest openings for a Hollywood movie on a working day i.e. Thursday", said Ashish Saksena, chief operating officer, cinemas at online ticketing site BookMyShow. With the addition of "Fast 8", the franchise has earned an estimated $4.4 billion globally.

Then there was the off-screen drama.

Behind megastars Vin Diesel and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, the latest "Furious" film opened exceptionally well in the rest of the world.

The $100.2 million is slightly below analyst expectations for the film. Both stars steered clear of each other at the picture's NY premiere and Diesel's attempt to brush aside the reports of a beef between the actors left something to be desired.

That doesn't make it a bad film. That's not to say there weren't some loud advocates. Audiences agreed, handing "The Fate of the Furious" an A CinemaScore. Theron played the antagonist of the film. This film has taken $250 million costs till it's reaching the box office. Despite the rising costs, the film remains on pace to top $1 billion worldwide, making more sequels a certainty.

The Oscar victor plays the villain in The Fate of the Furious, joining franchise stars Vin Diesel, Ludacris, Tyrese Gibson, Michelle Rodriguez, and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson for the eighth installment of the street racing films. Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" nabbed third, taking in $13.6 million to push its stateside haul to a mighty $454.7 million. Paramount's global flop has now earned RMB 185 million ($26.9 million) in a disappointing Chinese release. Rounding out the top five were "Smurfs: The Lost Village" with $6.5 million and "Going in Style" with $6.4 million. The studio has not released an official production budget, but it is reported to be in the pricey $250 million range.

Most studios steered clear of "The Fate of the Furious", but there were a few fearless newcomers opening in limited release.
