The election will be held June 8.

British Prime Minister Theresa May today called for snap elections on June 8 in a surprise move that stunned her allies as well as opponents, asserting that it is the only way to guarantee political stability in the country for years after the United Kingdom leaves the European Union. While we do not rule out the possibility of near-term sterling strength, as traders priced in a Conservative victory in the snap election, we remain bearish on the currency's longer term outlook as the tough Brexit negotiations return to the spotlight.

There will be a Commons vote on the proposed election on Wednesday - opposition Labour Party has said it will vote with the government, reported BBC. By midday trading in London, it was trading 0.7 percent higher at $1.2658.

Labour campaigned for Britain to remain in the European Union, but Corbyn says he will respect voters' decision to leave. She said the political divisions "risk our ability to make a success of Brexit".

There are two reasons an election may occur before five years has passed, one being if a motion of no confidence is passed and no government is confirmed within 14 days.

The leader of the SNP, Nicola Sturgeon, said that the government would use the election to take the country to the right and try to push through a hard Brexit and deeper cuts.

With a large majority, May would be less beholden to extreme euroskeptics inside the Conservative Party while winning a personal mandate would strengthen her position as prime minister.

He said: "The people of Britain spoke very clearly at the referendum about our membership in the European Union and it's important the Prime Minister has a proper majority in the Commons to push through the will of the public".

Mr Tusk said in a tweet that he had had a "good phone call" with May about the coming British elections, following her announcement in London.

"I have concluded that the only way to guarantee certainty and security is to get your support", she said.

Theresa May's general election call is a twist worthy of an Alfred Hitchcock film, the official running the EU's Brexit negotiations has suggested. That's pretty unlikely, since recent polls indicate that the Conservatives have a almost 20-point lead over Labor, but it's still a potentially risky move.

Prof. Martin Smith, head of the politics department at the University of York, said: "There is a danger that the prime minister's decision to call a snap election may appear both cynical and hypocritical".

"She comes out on to the steps of Downing Street this morning and says everything has changed, she says people are opposing Brexit now".

May is capitalizing on her runaway lead in the opinion polls. A win means May can claim a mandate for her own approach to Brexit.

The Labour leader indicated that his MPs would support Mrs May's demand for an early election, which will require the backing of two-thirds of all MPs.

"They are wrong", she said.

The mechanism for a government in Britain to call a new election is more complicated than it used to be.

May became Prime Minister on July 13, 2016 after David Cameron resigned following the Brexit result.
