Pound gets a lift from May's election call

May's announcement Tuesday in London came as a surprise.

And May's own apparent red lines - including strong barriers against a new movement of EU workers to Britain and no role for the European Court of Justice in policing the Brexit deal - increase the likelihood that EU leaders will take a tough stance against her, no matter the view of the British people.

"After Britain's Brexit vote, predictability and reliability are more important than ever". Readers will recall that she is the Tory party leader and prime minister only because she was the lone candidate remaining after the political bloodbath that followed the Brexit referendum last June.

In a shock announcement, UK Prime Minister Theresa May on Tuesday called for an early general election to be held on June 8 to seek a strong mandate as she negotiates Britain's exit from the EU. A stronger majority could give her a more stable foundation that she could use to take a more accommodating approach in negotiations with the European Union without worrying that unhappy Euroskeptics would force her hand.

The British pound has risen strongly after Prime Minister Theresa May called for an early general election in June.

Meanwhile, the single currency moved higher against the dollar, with EUR/USD rising 0.5% to 1.0695. That is crucial, because leaving the European Union provides us with a unique opportunity to shape a brighter future for Britain.

The Liberal Democrats, emboldened after deposing Tory Zac Goldsmith in a recent by-election on an anti-Brexit ticket, announced they had gained 2,500 new members in the wake of Ms May's election statement. Now, the prime minister needs the backing of two-thirds of lawmakers and May said she would put her election call to the House of Commons on Wednesday.

Rather than a tiny parliamentary majority, Labour had no majority at all.

Shimla: 43 killed as bus falls into Tons river
Additional Chief Secretary (Disaster management) Tarun Shridhar said that as per the report, the casualty is very high. The accident occurred in Nerwa area of Shimla district. "Bus conductor is also among the survivers".

Investors were continuing to monitor political developments ahead of the upcoming French presidential elections as the race tightened after a surge in polls for far-left candidate Jean-Luc Melenchon, who wants a referendum on the country's European Union membership. Although May has been the face of hard Brexit since taking office, it could be said that she has been forced to chart this course by the Parliament she inherited.

Tusk said on Twitter that he had a "good" telephone conversation with May after she called for the election.

May said she has concluded that the "only way to guarantee certainty and security for years ahead is to hold this election".

The Fixed-Term Parliaments Act sets the general election date as the first Thursday in May every five years, meaning 2020 is the next expected contest.

Mrs May has a majority of 17 seats in the House of Commons and this makes her vulnerable to defeat on major issues if rebel Conservatives side with the opposition. The opposition Labour Party, which trails May's Conservative Party in opinion polls, has said it supports such a move. She said divisions in Westminster would cause "damaging uncertainty and instability" and put the Brexit negotiations at risk.

Mr Dimbleby added: "When you are trying to say "I speak for Britain", you've got to get out there and listen to what Britain says back to you and argue your case". "We have to think that this is going to affect day-to-day reality ... on the ground".

But a Downing Street source said the Prime Minister would flatly reject any proposal for a TV show down, saying: "Our answer is no".
