Its first-quarter operating profit neared the historic high of 10.2 trillion won in the third quarter of 2013 by adding 7.4 percent to the strong fourth quarter on a spike in both global chip prices and demand.
Samsung also said in January that conditions were likely to be tough this year, guiding for a "slowdown" in the smartphone sector and more competition in the market for display panels.
The quarterly earnings preview show that how Samsung's business is booming while its stock trade near historic highs, despite unprecedented crises in recent months.
Over at Samsung headquarters meanwhile, the company reported preliminary operating profit of 9.9 trillion won ($8.7 billion) for the first quarter of 2017, a jump of nearly 50% from a year ago.

He is due to make his first court appearance today, alongside four other Samsung executives, and could face at least five years in prison if found guilty.

Prosecutors allege 48-year-old Mr Lee used more than £30m in company funds to bribe Ms Park to help ensure a smooth leadership transition at Samsung after his father suffered a heart attack in 2014.
