Nicholson said the "MOAB" ordnance - for Massive Ordnance Air Blast, or less formally, the "Mother of All Bombs" - was "designed to destroy caves and tunnels, which ISIS-K have been using, along with extensive belts of IEDs, to thicken their positions against our offensive". In the black and white video, the bomb can be seen as a black speck descending upon a valley surrounded by mountainous terrain before it strikes and unleashes 11 tons of explosives.
The Islamic State group denied on Saturday it had suffered casualties from the USA military's largest non-nuclear bomb which hit its mountain hideouts in Afghanistan, in a statement on its propaganda agency Amaq.
"We had persistent surveillance over the area before, during and after the operation, and now we have Afghan and USA forces on the site, and see no evidence of civilian casualties", Nicholson said.
US special forces and Afghan commandos are now inspecting the site, Nicholson said, adding, "the weapon achieved its intended objective".
The massive bomb terrified villagers 20 miles away across the border in Pakistan with a blast they described as earsplitting. He said Afghan forces were at the tunnel complex assessing the damage.
