Delta Still Recovering From Atlanta Thunderstorms

Many people opted for different transportation options or booked flights on other airlines.

Social media was abuzz with people thanking Delta for providing the free meal - and most importantly, the great customer service. The resulting backlash, planes and flight crews out of position for the next day, led to the flurry of cancellations.

On Saturday morning, Delta said about 275 flights were canceled and on Sunday about 150 were axed.

The New York Times reports that the trouble started when thunderstorms rolled into Atlanta on Wednesday, delaying flights and putting a hold on incoming planes for several hours at Delta Air Lines' biggest hub.

Compounding the problem now is all the spring break travelers. Our employees are doing all they can, picking up extra flights, working overtime and going above and beyond for our customers on the phone and in gate areas.

"The specific track and intensity of weather like this is often hard to forecast", West said in remarks on Thursday.

Delta Air Lines Inc said it had canceled almost 3,000 flights this week after a severe storm hit its hometown of Atlanta, Georgia and apologized for its response to the "unprecedented" weather. According to Delta, about 60 percent of Delta's 1,250 aircraft fleet cycles through Atlanta on any given day, presumably accounting for the severity of delays and cancelations.

Schurer arrived in Atlanta after being stuck in San Francisco for three days. Many have been forced to sleep on chairs and floors of airport terminals, trying to make due with only their carry-on possessions.

In all, they said they spent more than $3,000 on rental cars, hotels, and new tickets because of the cancellations, as well as countless hours on hold with Delta's help line. "We, as always, learn from these experiences".
