On the Syria issue, Xi said: "Any use of chemical weapons is unacceptable".
Beijing is willing to work with Washington on ending North Korea's nuclear weapons program but wants a peaceful solution to the escalating conflict, Chinese President Xi Jinping told President Donald Trump in a phone call Wednesday.
China's decision to abstain was a welcome development for America as it works to ramp up pressure on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, even though a Russian Federation veto kept the measure from passing.
The vote shows that China's president appears intent to build on the rapport Trump says the two leaders established in their first meeting at the USA leader's Florida resort. And Thursday, the president tweeted that he had "great confidence that China will properly deal with North Korea". And President Xi was enjoying it.
Less than two months after branding China the "grand champion" of currency manipulation, Donald Trump has performed a breathtaking pirouette away from those allegations, declaring: "They're not currency manipulators". China has opposed military action against Assad's government since Syria's civil war began, urging a political solution instead. In fact, Trump mentioned "dessert" or "cake" five times while telling the story. The Global Times, a nationalist newspaper affiliated with the Communist Party, warned that a nuclear test now would represent a "slap in the face" to the USA government and could prompt China to restrict oil sales to North Korea.
The official, who briefed reporters on condition of anonymity, would not say whether Trump personally asked Xi that China not veto the resolution. "We talked trade. We talked a lot of things", Trump told reporters at a joint news conference on Wednesday with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation secretary general Jens Stoltenberg at the White House.
Rangers to test road success in playoffs
The Blue Jackets are going to need to make a concerted effort to slow down Kessel, whose seven shots in Game 1 led all players. It's still too early to panic, but a Game 2 loss would change that, especially if the Canadiens struggle to score again.
If Xi does not get on Trump's bad side, China can maybe expect a more favorable outcome from the US president.
And while there are "some very good things about a strong dollar", Trump said, "It's very, very hard to compete when you have a strong dollar and other countries are devaluing their currency".
The effortless flip-flop suggests that the White House's foreign policy will deviate from what voters heard on the campaign trail.
Trump will express to Stoltenberg that he is "100 percent committed to the alliance", the official said. That led to last week's summit. It's actually consistent with much of what he said; that he wanted to try to use America's leverage in the relationship to get slightly better deals.
Trump's flip on China may be proof that Cohn carried out a successful coup on Pennsylvania Avenue. In the same interview, he said his administration wouldn't formally accuse the country of manipulating its currency to gain a trade advantage, retreating from a core campaign promise. Xi emphasized: "China adheres to the goal of denuclearization of the peninsula and insists on preserving peace and stability on the peninsula". "He is the most friendly United States president ever".
What Beijing wants in North Korea is stability, not potentially disruptive change.
