Malloy's announcement Thursday also gives Republican candidates who have already announced their intention to run for the seat a chance to distinguish themselves from a pack that doesn't include the unpopular governor.

"For that reason, I am today announcing that I will not seek a third term as governor", Malloy said.

Speaking from the state Capitol on Thursday, Malloy said he hopes voters who are unhappy with him will "recognize, some day, what we've actually done" to strengthen the CT "for the long term".

Included in that list is Ted Kennedy, Jr., state senator from Branford.

"I'm not sure I agree with that, but I take it as a compliment", he said.

Following the December 14, 2012, mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Malloy signed sweeping new restrictions on weapons and ammunition magazines similar to the ones used by the man who fatally shot 20 children and six educators.
