Suspect arrested for trying to ram police auto near US Capitol

Eva Malecki, the communications director for the US Capitol Police, said at a press conference that the shots were fired in the process of an arrest. It's not clear when she rammed the Capitol police cruiser.

She was due in court Wednesday morning in a domestic violence case at approximately the same time as the incident at the Capitol, according to online court records in Maryland.

"There is not - on the record before me - sufficient information" to show "the defendant isn't competent", Meriweather said.

She identified the suspect as a female who had been observed driving erratically, almost striking Capitol Police officials while making a U-turn.

Her vehicle was later stopped, and officers took Everett into custody.
