One misdemeanor charge against Bentley stemmed from a $50,000 loan he made to his campaign in November that investigators said he failed to report until January.
Furthermore he was sentenced to a year's probation, 100 hours of community service and required to return almost $40,000 from a campaign account to the Alabama state treasury. It contributed to one of the other most notorious recent stories coming out of Alabama politics: the attempt to close driver's license offices in predominantly black counties.

"Today is a dark day in Alabama, but also it's one of opportunity", she said during her swearing-in ceremony.
But she said she didn't feel Ivey responded appropriately.
Ivey grew up in rural Camden, Ala., raised on a farm.
Ivey has a folksy, no-nonsense demeanor and has been a steady hand at lieutenant governor, a largely ceremonial post, presiding over the state Senate.

On the night of his re-election in the 2014 gubernatorial race, Bentley was allegedly convinced that his opponent had a copy of the recording and told Alabama Law Enforcement Secretary Spencer Collier to travel to Greenville to retrieve it.
After Bentley discovered that his wife was reading his text messages, he started using "burner phones" to communicate with Mason. So I think that also says, 'Hey, we're getting our stuff together.
"I remember just trembling, and she was kind of shaking too, but everything we talked about, she recognized it as well, and we knew that there was a problem", Hannah recalled.
"If we are going to do what we did the other day, we are going to have to start locking the door", the governor is heard saying.
All of this might have never come out if it weren't for Alabama's former chief law enforcement officer Spencer Collier, who went public with allegations against the governor previous year.
The former first lady's chief of staff also charged that Bentley threatened her job because he believed she had helped his wife make the recordings. A sixth is expected to join the ranks if Iowa Governor Terry Branstad, a Republican, is confirmed as U.S. Ambassador to China-President Donald Trump nominated him for the role in December-and he's replaced by his lieutenant Kim Reynolds, a Republican.
