In an interview with MSNBC's Greta Van Susteren on Wednesday, Spicer said he "screwed up" on a "personal and professional" level. "You had someone as despicable as Hitler who didn't even sink to using chemical weapons".
The reaction to Spicer's comments instantly spread through social media.
CORNISH: So Spicer was supposed to be talking about last week's apparent sarin gas attack in Syria.
Hitler didn't use use chemical weapons on the battlefield but he and the Nazis used gas chambers to exterminate Jews. Many of them with poison gas. Depending upon the account, though, this is either because their program wasn't sophisticated enough, they were anxious about its impact on their horses, or because they feared the Allies had much more deadly chemical weapons.
Jimmy Kimmel and Chelsea Handler both mocked Sean Spicer for his insensitive comments about Hitler and the Holocaust on Tuesday.
"It was a mistake".
"I love it", Spicer said of his job. "It was inappropriate and insensitive".
"I made a mistake".

Now, Sean Spicer did put out a written statement about his own comments today, saying he wasn't trying to lessen the horrendous nature of the Holocaust. I was trying to draw a distinction of the tactic of using airplaines to drop chemical weapons on population centres.
"It's a very holy week for Jewish and Christian people.to make a gaffe and a mistake like this is inexcusable and reprehensible", he said.

There are Holocaust survivors out there who were listening to what you said and couldn't believe a spokesman, the press secretary for the president of the United States, would make such a statement. Bannon also told his associates, "I love a gunfight", according to an Axios report, which said that "the hatred between the two wings" in the White House was "intense and irreconcilable".
Spicer was attempting to discuss the horror of the chemical-weapons attack last week in Syria, which the Trump administration is blaming on President Bashar al-Assad.
