Howard, the four-star officer who leads U.S. Naval Forces in Europe and Africa, told Reuters the United States had made a decision to launch the strikes after the United Nations failed to pass a resolution condemning a deadly chemical weapons attack that killed scores of people in rebel-held Khan Sheikhoun.

"We conducted strikes against an air field which was the means by which the chemicals were launched into the air".

US Secretary of State Tillerson is due to arrive in Moscow on Tuesday for two days of talks.

"But the Security Council hasn't been able to condemn it or do anything about it".

"I'm disappointed in that response from the Russians because it indicates their continued support for the Assad regime", said Tillerson.

"I find it very disappointing but - sadly, I have to tell you - not all that surprising".

Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued a stern warning about the "inevitable negative consequences" that will follow U.S. air strikes on Syria and said it's "regrettable" United States relations have been damaged.

While threatening further strikes, Haley also said it was time to press on with diplomatic efforts to achieve a political solution to end the war.

Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Israel, Japan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey all supported Washington, with Ankara also calling for a no-fly zone in Syria.

Australia has about 40 per cent of the world's uranium reserves and exports almost 7,000 tonnes of yellow cake annually. Turnbull reiterated Australia's support for India's membership of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum (APEC).

At the United Nations on Friday, Russia's deputy ambassador, Vladimir Safronkov, strongly criticized what he called the U.S.

The change in tone has also been noticeable in Russia's foreign ministry, where Tillerson's upcoming visit had been seen as a first step in getting relations back on track.

Still, not all Trump voters agreed with the missile strike, echoing objections from some on the far right that it ran counter to his campaign promises.

Fired from the USS Porter and the USS Ross, the cruise missiles targeted radars, aircraft, air defense systems and other logistical components.

Howard said the integration of the strikes was "flawless" and showed the ability of the U.S. Navy to project power around the world.

Trudeau said that prior to the strikes taking place, U.S. Defence Secretary Jim Mattis called Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan, who then briefed the prime minister. He said Washington came dangerously close to "a military clash" with nuclear-armed Moscow by firing 59 cruise missiles on the Shayrat air base. A warehouse, a training facility, a mess hall, six MiG-23s under fix and a radar station were destroyed in the attack, according to Konashenkov, but the airstrip and parked jets were not damaged. In response to the attack, Russian Federation suspended an agreement with the U.S.to avoid mid-air collisions over Syria and called for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council.

The Rangers have been in Manbij to maintain the peace between rival factions of Syrian Kurdish and Turkish forces; the Marines have set up artillery to provide offensive fire support for thousands of Syrian Arab partner forces advancing on Raqqa, the de facto ISIS capital in Syria.

Russian Federation has stood by Damascus despite the global uproar, insisting the chemical weapons that caused the deaths in Khan Sheikhun had been stockpiled by "terrorists" and possibly released by a conventional strike.

"God willing, these strikes will be a clear warning to Bashar al-Assad, to tell him: Bashar, enough killing and injustice against these people", said Abu Ali, a man in his 40s.
