A gunman has opened fire with a pistol in a California special-needs classroom, killing his teacher wife and one student before taking his own life.

The police did not engage the shooter, who appeared to have killed himself, the local news affiliate CBS Los Angeles reported. "But, there's nobody that, in the investigation, has come forward to say that they saw this coming". The student is described as being in stable condition.

Police did not identify the shooter or the teacher.

One teacher and two students were shot, a law enforcement spokesperson told KCAL.

The San Bernardino City Unified School District said the students were being evacuated to nearby Cajon High School. Officials said they could be there for several hours as police interview them. The school was on lockdown until further notice.
