The United States should work with South Korea, Japan and China to come up with a plan for what would happen in North Korea after the fall of Korean leader Kim Jong-un, a US senator said Monday.

According to the state-sanctioned North Korean news outlet KCNA, a foreign ministry spokesperson for the government of Kim Jong-un said, "Swaggering as a superpower, the U.S. has been picking only on countries without nuclear weapons and the Trump administration is no exception".

Those include getting rid of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's remaining chemical weapons stocks and pressing Assad to negotiate Syria's future.

However, Beijing knows Washington will not resort to such perilous proposition because North Korea - with nuclear capabilities and potential to strike back resulting in huge ramifications for USA allies Japan and South Korea - is a far riskier target than Syria.

Japan, which has seen previous North Korean missile tests fall within 200 miles of its coast, praised the USA carrier movement. There has been much speculation that Pyongyang will test missiles or possibly a nuclear device to mark the day.

North Korea, for its part, denounced what it called Washington's "reckless moves" toward war, according to a statement carried by its official Korean Central News Agency.

Obama warned Trump before he took office that the rogue nation's nuclear program would present him with the most worrisome global challenge. Pyongyang claims it is pursuing nuclear weapons to defend itself from what it calls United States aggression. "The objective is for us to increase our exports to them". In his official notification of the airstrikes to Congress on Saturday, Trump explained that the intent of the airstrikes was to stabilize the region and dissuade the Assad regime from "using or proliferating chemical weapons" to avoid "a worsening of the region's current humanitarian catastrophe".
