Bentley had been under heavy political pressure since a year ago, when recordings surfaced of him making romantic and sexually charged comments in 2014 to aide Rebekah Caldwell Mason before his divorce.
"The overwhelming majority of elected officials are good, hard working people who love their communities, state and nation", the Alabama GOP steering committee said in a statement.
"Mason bragged that Governor Bentley had called and told her that he had opened his hotel room door to hotel staff while clad in boxers, believing Mason was on the other side", the report noted.
The Judiciary Committee also alleged Bentley intimidated staffers and law enforcement to keep quiet about his questionable relationship with Mason. It is very rare, though, for legislators to try to leverage those issues to impeach a governor.
The person spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information.

The Republican governor has acknowledged making personal mistakes but has denied doing anything illegal or anything that would merit removal from office.
The governor's own party has asked him to step down, and last week, Alabama House Speaker Mac McCutcheon and Senate Pro Tem Del Marsh added their voices to the chorus of lawmakers calling on Bentley to resign immediately.
For example, Governor Bentley directed law enforcement officers to (1) end his relationship with Mason on his behalf; (2) drive to Tuscaloosa to recover a copy of the recordings from his son; (3) drive to Greenville to confront a longtime public servant about whether she had a copy of the recordings; and (4) investigate who had a copy of the recordings and identify potential crimes with which they could be charged.
